Call Out

Call Out is an ever-growing alphabetical compilation of names that is read aloud to the
general public, by a familiar voice, at a variety of public locations.
On social media, we urge people to add to the list the names of women in politics, the art
world, cultural affairs, or science who have inspired, enthused, emboldened, and motivated
them in their lives.
Call Out makes women’s biographies and shared struggles more visible in everyday life.
At each new Call Out action, a familiar voice can be heard reading aloud the latest version of
the ever-growing alphabetical list. The different intonation each speaker brings to the list
lends it a particular melodic resonance: a touch of local color.
The sources of inspiration are not local, however, but global. By plotting new landscapes on
the world map, the project highlights women’s histories, known and unknown, and
transcends national borders. The women’s names intoned here are melded in a vibrant
living soundscape.
